you must be doing something right - i still get failures on my standalone - but now just use my laptop - 10% failure doesnt really bother me that much other than the swearing and cursing that must accompany such experience due to the minor inconvenience

:)

crap; that's a bummer! the failure of the stand alone.

frankly, it was the laptops that went the fastest for me; I had one that started failing after I had it one month.

truth is, though, I don't buy the top of the line systems. I usu go for mid to low end, so that might be the nature of my problem with the original computers.

here's to both of us and cont'd success--stand alone or laptop. and yeah, I could live with 10%; mine always was about 25% when it started to go bad, and then in a month or so it would just go to 80-90%!

the one thing that struck me was a guy I knew at the computer store, Frys, told me that whenever he buys a new system, which he gets one a yr or so thru the store, he automatically picks up a stand alone burner and HD, just like he was buying a carrying case for a laptop. ie, he just considers it a necessary purchase as part of his start up.

BUT, clearly a few folks have posted about their laptop burner working fine, so my experience may be singular, even if I am now fat enough to not have that term applied to me in any legitimate sense of the word.

i suppose i should have been more explicit - i have only had the Alienware laptop for about 2-3 months, so i really have no long term experiences to go by. my bad.

certainly agree with the computer guy about external HD's - i currently use three (yes, I am anal). Love LaCie externals - they just came out with a 2TB HD that they had onsale (time expired) for $250!!! talk about falling prices on memory :)

lord knows I can use as much memory as I can get, since I personally have none in the organic computer system located in my head (talk about harddrive failure)

That is my feeling too Dire..... 10% seemed maybe a little high, but I figure some failure was to be expected. I usually burn mine at no higher than 4X to 8X and it is aggravating to come back 20 mins later to learn that I have to start all over again.
